March is National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme is “Food Connects Us.” Each week, we will focus on different ways food connects us to our community, family, and health.

Week one includes learning about connecting families to food resources in our community. These resources can help families ensure they meet their nutritional needs while on a budget. Examples of food resources include our local Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) offices, food banks, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The links below are available to help connect families with local resources:

    • Families may be eligible for SNAP benefits to help make their grocery dollars stretch further. They can apply online here or via mail.
    • Families receiving SNAP, TANF, or Medicaid benefits may be eligible for WIC. They can find their local WIC office here or Call 1-800-841-1410 to begin the application process.
    • For a list of local food banks in Snohomish County, click here.

Week two focuses on connecting individuals with a qualified nutrition expert. March 12 is Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day. Great news! CHC has registered dietitians (RDs) on staff to help address nutrition-related concerns and promote healthy relationships with foods while connecting with patients. Providers can refer patients to us for nutrition education, counseling for specific chronic conditions, or discussing their nutritional goals.

Week three focuses on exploring the connection between food and culture. Whether it’s handing down family recipes or exploring new cuisines, food helps build connections between our cultures, friends, and family. Mealtime is a great way to connect with the special people in your life and see how they are doing or ask about their days. A fun way to explore this week is by trying a new or different dish outside your typical meals with family and friends. For inspiration on new dishes, check out this link and have fun!

Week four, the final week of National Nutrition Month, focuses on learning how food connects across all stages of life. Balanced eating and a healthy relationship with food begins at a young age! From learning to recognize and honor our hunger and satiety cues to exploring new tastes and textures, building the foundations of a healthy relationship with food when we are young helps us meet our nutritional needs as we age and enjoy a wide variety of food! Below are some quick resources for nutrition across the ages:
